"Autopsy", Circa 1900

A disturbing and somewhat prurient image from the Corbis website. Title reads, simply, "Autopsy."

Particularly disturbing is the fact that the photograph was posed in a studio.

Particularly disturbing is the fact that the "autopsy" was posed in a photographer's studio. Notice the painted bookcases, a false backdrop.

These 'anatomical autopsy' photographs seem to have been something of a fashion. I've seen three different versions (including this one which appears in Chas Addams' peculiar 'Dear Dead Days' compendium, if memory serves).

They all appear to be riffs on the same basic theme - an older, bearded 'surgeon' (presumably) about to slice up some naked deceased nubile.
